If you've seen our shows, or if you've seen live
improv of any kind, you may be wondering to yourself
"how do they do that?" There are several ways you
can learn to do improv. One of those ways is
reading. I am going to tell you about two great
books that are must reads if you want to step into
the world of improv. The first is "Truth in Comedy"
by Del Close and Charna Halpern. This book explores
the basics and
foundations of improv and teaches the Harold, a well
know type of long form improv. This book is also
very easy to read.
The second book is "Improvisation for the Theater"
by Viola Spolin. This is also a must read for
anyone interested in entering the world of improv.
Viola Spolin's improvisational techniques have
changed the nature of modern theater. I really
can't say enough about this book. It is full of
technique, theory, games, exercises, more games and
more exercises. It is a delight to read because
Spolin was groundbreaking and passionate about
theater and improv.
Another way to learn improv is by taking classes.
It just so happens 88 Improv will be offering improv
workshops starting in June. Read the article to the
left to find out more!
